Carmen’s parents were Italian and Hungarian. Father Giuseppe Dell’Orefice, a symphony violinist and his wife Margaret her mother was a Hungarian decent dancer. They were constantly breaking up and getting back together.

Carmen was brings back together with her mother and moved to New York in 1942. Through the wife of photographer Herman Landschoff approached to her and asked her if she would like to model, while she riding the 57th Street bus to ballet class at the age of 13. She needed to reconsider her future career options that chance of meeting in Manhattan.
According to Carmen her first photo shot was taken at Jones Beach were a ‘’flop’’, declared ‘’totally un-photogenic’’ in her first test. Carmen was posed with woman’s photographer-husband; she had the modeling bug in that moment.
In 1946 at the age of 15, for $7.50 per hour Carmen signed a contract with Vogue and her godfather elected to introduce to Carol Philips, a staff writer at Vogue. Philips took Carmen in to be tested again and less than a week results were dynamite.
